Man faces felony charges after car chase

November 29, 2012

A Big Spring man was arrested Wednesday night after law enforcement officials say a domestic dispute turned into a short vehicle pursuit that endangered the welfare of three children.

Michael Shay Vanderbilt, 38, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd. (apartment number not provided) was arrested in the 1500 block of Wood Street and charged with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and three counts of abandoning/endangering a child – criminal negligence.

According to Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker, the domestic altercation was reported near Neighbors Convenience Store, located in the 3300 block of E. FM 700.

“We received the call at approximately 9:15 p.m. that a domestic dispute was happening in the convenience store parking lot,” Parker said. “According to the caller, a man was physically assaulting a female subject. We already had a deputy in that area and he responded.”

Parker said the deputy attempted to stop Vanderbilt, at which time he fled.

“When he decided to evade arrest he had three children in the vehicle. None of the three were restrained and could have been injured in the pursuit,” Parker said. “That's the reason he is being charged with abandoning/endangering a child – criminal negligence. Luckily, however, none of the children were hurt as a result of the pursuit.”

Parker said despite the initially reported assault, no substantial injuries were sustained by any of the parties involved in the incident.
As of press time, Vanderbilt was still in the custody of the Howard County Detention Center.

Bond was set this morning by Justice of the Peace Quail Dobbs at $10,000 for the charge of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and $7,500 for each count of abandoning/endangering a child – criminal negligence, for a total of $32,500.
