Marcelline Margaruite (Besson) Buchanan

Marcelline Margaruite (Besson) Buchanan a long-time resident of Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas, passed away at Youngblood Eldercare in Lamesa on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, after a lengthy illness. Marcelline was 94 years old.
Marcelline was born in Galata, Mont., on March 24, 1918, and grew up in Arkansas and Oklahoma before coming to Texas. She had been a member of the Church of Christ since 1936. Marcelline graduated from high school in Snyder, Okla., in 1936 and Draughon’s Business College in Wichita Falls, Texas. She worked for an accounting firm and Turner Chevrolet in Lawton, Okla., as a bookkeeper until 1939. In 1939 she moved from Lawton to Big Spring, Texas, to work at Lone Star Chevrolet with Miss Pearl Cutsinger, her former office manager in Lawton, who had moved to Big Spring.
Marcelline wed Gordon Edward (Pete) Buchanan Jr., a native of Big Spring, on Sept. 6, 1941, in Lubbock, Texas. Pete was a farmer and cotton ginner. In the 1940s and early 1950s, she worked as a bookkeeper for Planters Gin Company in Big Spring, and Knott Gin, in Knott, Texas, while Pete worked as a cotton ginner in these locations. In 1954, the family moved to Lamesa, Texas. She served as a bookkeeper at the Key Gin Company east of Lamesa and Midway Gin Company south of Key, while Pete managed gin operations. Upon Pete’s retirement, Marcelline served as the church secretary for the Downtown Church of Christ for many years. Marcelline will be remembered for active service for the Church with many years of teaching Bible classes and visiting the sick and shut-ins. She also volunteered for the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary until her retirement.
Her father was George Joseph Louis Besson, a native of Majirot, France. Her mother was Marie (Bernard) Besson, a native of Hollerick, Luxembourg. Her parents migrated to the United States in 1912. Marcelline was the fourth of five children born to George and Marie Besson.
Marcelline was preceded in death by her parents, George and Marie Besson of Lawton, Okla.; her husband, Gordon Edward (Pete) Buchanan Jr. of Lamesa, Texas; her older sister, Jeannette Margaret (Besson) Dixson of Sun City, Calif.; her older brothers, George Louis Besson of Albuquerque, N.M., Raymond Besson of Lawton, and a younger brother, Henry Desire Besson of North Richland Hills, Texas.
Marcelline is survived by a son, James Edwin (Ed) Buchanan,and his wife, Linda, of Elgin, Texas; two granddaughters, Amy Michelle Buchanan of Elgin, Texas and Julie Ann Buchanan of Austin, Texas; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ, 702 N. 14th St., in Lamesa at 9:30 a.m., June 13, 2012, with Mark Hackett officiating. Internment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Mount Olive Cemetery in Big Spring. Marcelline will be interred between her late husband Pete and an infant son who died at birth Feb. 3, 1943.
Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Branon Funeral Home, 403 N. Austin Ave., Lamesa, Texas. Funeral arrangements are by Branon Funeral Home.
