Mary Deanda Gomez, 89, of Austin, Texas, died Thursday, May 16, 2013, at her home after a brief illness. Mary was born in Big Spring, Texas, and had resided in Austin since 1976.

Friends and family will remember Mary’s passion for gardening and flowers. From an early “Victory Garden” in the 1940s in Big Spring through her residences in New Orleans, San Antonio and Austin, Mary always nurtured and cared for her gardens as well as her family and children.

She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her daughter, Sophie Gomez M.D. of Yakima, Wash., and son, Fabian S. Gomez of Austin. Mary is also survived by two grandchildren, Edward John Gomez and Delilah Gomez; and two great-granddaughters.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Rd., Austin, Texas. Interment will follow in Austin Memorial Park, Austin, Texas.
