Mary Helen Axtens Smith

Mary Helen Axtens Smith, 95, of Stamford, formerly of Lubbock and Big Spring, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013 in Stamford. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Mount Olive Cemetery in Big Spring with the Rev. Paul Wright officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home in Stamford.

She was born Aug. 19, 1918, in Tennessee, the daughter of Arthur Lee and Dellie (Melton) Axtens. After graduating from Big Spring High School, Helen met and married Luke Felton Smith Jr. in 1938 in Big Spring, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1979. Helen worked as the office manager for their refrigeration company in Lubbock. She attended Trinity Church in Lubbock before moving to Stamford in 2008.

Preceding Helen in death were her parents; her husband; a daughter, Linda Mires; daughter-in-law, Helen Iris Smith; grandson, Roger Sparks; her stepmother, Alma Axtens; sisters, Nellie Annen and Lyda Mae Sanborn; and three brothers, Lee Axtens, George Axtens and Olie Axtens.

Family left to cherish Helen’s memory are two sons, Luke Felton Smith, III of Denison and Robert Lewis Smith and wife Melinda of Stamford; a brother, Jack Axtens of Royce City; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
