Mary Ruth Peterson, 83, of Big Spring went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, July 29, 2013, in Big Spring. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Mary Ruth was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Ackerly, Texas, to J.C. and Maybelle (Reed) Niblett. She married Rodney Peterson on Feb. 13, 1954, in Lovington, N.M. He preceded her in death July 29, 2011.

Mary Ruth loved to crochet and quilt. She was known for her chocolate pies and banana pudding. Mary Ruth operated the Peterson's Grocery in Ackerly for more than 20 years after her mother passed away. She enjoyed and cherished spending time with her grandchildren and especially her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharon McGrievy and husband Mike of Big Spring, Jill Reed and husband Johnny, also of Big Spring and Kim Merket and husband Rusty of Hermleigh; three grandchildren, Stacia Coleman and husband Chad of Big Spring, Jarrod Reed and girlfriend Jessica Riddle of Blanket and Kendra Merket of Hermleigh; two great-grandchildren, Mia Coleman of Big Spring and Trenten Merket of Hermleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Cecil Yvonne Stickels.

The family suggests memorials be made to the New Mexico Christian Children's Home, 1356 New Mexico 236, Portales, NM 88130; or the American Cancer Society, c/o Carolyn Brooks, P.O. Box 2121, Big Spring, TX 79721-2121.
