Mayes signs with Oklahoma Wesleyan University

May 10, 2012

Big Spring High School student Diamond Mayes signed a letter of intent Thursday to play basketball at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.

When introducing Diamond Mayes to the crowd who gathered to watch her sign a letter of intent to play basketball at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Big Spring High School Athletic Director Phillip Ritchey said “Diamond (Mayes) is what all Big Spring Steers — Lady Steers should be like.”

Mayes, who has played on the varsity basketball team for four years, as well as other sports, received a full scholarship to OWU.

What drew Mayes to the school was the similarities between there and Big Spring.

“The atmosphere was great,” Mayes said. “The coaches were great. Everyone was friendly. It reminded me of home.”

Mayes cites her spirituality as another reason for her enrollment at OWU.
“I wanted to keep my faith,” she added. “I didn't want to stray away from God. He's the reason I've made it this far.”

Mayes' mother, Desiree Mayes-Fizer, couldn't be happier for her daughter and her success.

“I am just overwhelmed,” Mayes-Fizer said. “I am very proud. Words can't really explain it. I have been crying all day.”

Driving seven and a half hours for the signing was Mark Molder, head basketball coach at OWU. Molder is looking forward to having a talent like Mayes on his squad next season.

“Obviously, she has the ability to play in the post,” Molder said. “But she also has great footwork. We are very excited to have her.”
As for Mayes, she is looking forward to competing at the next level, but will be doing it with her hometown in her heart.

“I really loved it here,” Mayes said. “I played varsity for four years here. Coach Warren molded me into the player I am and I am going to take this and represent Big Spring in Oklahoma.”
