Menefield qualifies for state meet in two events

LUBBOCK — Just as he did in 2010, Big Spring High School’s Mike Menefield will compete in two events at the upcoming state track and field meet in Austin.

Menefield qualified for the state meet by placing first in the triple jump and second in the long jump at the Region I-3A meet, which concluded Tuesday in Lubbock.

After winning the triple jump during the first day of the regional meet Monday, Menefield recorded a distance of 22 feet, 1.25 inches to place second in the long jump Tuesday.

He tried to qualify in a third event, but finished fourth in the 100-meter run with a time of 11.02 seconds.

Menefield was the only member of the BSHS boys’ track team to qualify for the state meet.

Other top finishers for BSHS included Seth Pearson, who placed fourth in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.

In the relays, BSHS finished sixth in the 800-meter event and fifth in the 1,600-meter run.

Johnson, relay squad
headed to state meet
ODESSA — The classification has changed but the destination remains the same for Forsan’s Ty Johnson and the Buffaloes’ 400-meter relay squad.

Both Johnson and the relay team earned their second straight trip to the state track and field meet by placing second in their repsective events at the Region I-2A meet in Odessa.

Johnson and the relay went to the Class 1A state meet in 2010.

Johnson won the 200-meter run in a time of 22.85, finishing just ahead of Kermit's Jon Pearson. He then finished behind Landon Meek of Wall in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 11.36 seconds, 5/100th of a second behind Meek.

Johnson then teamed with Brendan Roman, Elgin Suazo and Kolten Smtih to finish second in the 400 relay in a time of 43.3 seconds. Sonora won the event in a time of 43.06.

Forsan’s Ambra Hill, who has been hampered with a groin injury, was unable to qualify for a third straight trip to the state track meet. Her best finish Tuesday was when she placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Stanton’s Montez
wins regional gold
ODESSA — Adam Montez of Stanton High School earned a spot in the upcoming Class 2A state track and field meet by winning the 800-meter run at the Region I-2A meet in Odessa Tuesday.

Montez won the event in a time of 1 minute, 58.05 seconds. Frank Baca of Muleshoe finished second, approximately two-tenths of a second behind Munoz.
