A.C. (Cotton) and Billie Mize will celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary on Saturday Aug. 31, 2013. The couple will spend a relaxing weekend in Ruidoso, N.M. Cotton was born in Big Spring. Billie was born Billie Yvonne Norris in California. As a young woman, she moved from Fresno, Calif. to Big Spring, Texas and began working at the state drug store where she met Cotton, after he returned from serving in World War II in the United States Air Force in January 1947. They had their very first date on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1947. They were married Aug. 31, 1947, at the Church of the Nazarene in Big Spring and have lived in Big Spring all their married life. Cotton was employed by Grapette and the 7Up Bottling Company, Gandy's and then he became self employed as a Morton Food distributor for over 30 years. Billie was employed for Cunningham and Cunningham as a legal secretary and Walton S. Morrison law firm. After well over 35 years, Billie retired from the VA hospital where she worked as a medical secretary/supervisor. Although they are both retired, Cotton continues do be actively involved with his rental properties with his son, Johnny. Both continue to be engaged in church and community activities. Cotton has participated in city, state and national fast pitch softball for more than 50 years.Cotton was honored to serve as mayor of his home town form 1986 to 1989 and was given further recognition for his contribution when the Cotton Mize softball field was named in his honor.Currently the couple enjoy their three children: Brenda Toner and husband John of Round Rock; Carol Pate and husband Joey of Big spring and Johnny Mize and wife Jill of Amarillo, as well as their six grandchildren and four great grandchildren, through the family social events and their great grandchildren's athletic events and special programs.Cotton and Billie both agree that marriage has had its ups and downs but their faith and trust in God has provided blessings of health, strength and encouragement throughout their 66 years together.We love you, from your family.
