Museum to host music performance

March 21, 2013

The Heritage Museum is usually a sedate place, but Saturday, there will be plenty of toe-tapping, hand-clapping, singing and guitar picking going on.

Big Spring natives Philip Ferguson and June Stocks and their band, Texas True, will perform a wide array of bluegrass-themed music from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, located at 510 Scurry.

Admission is free to the event, Museum Director Nancy Raney said. A CD of the band's music will be on sale, with half of the proceeds going to the museum.

Texas True is an all-acoustic group which plays country, bluegrass, gospel and original songs, Raney said.

“One of the museum's friends is friends with Ferguson, and she thought it would be neat if we had them here, with them being Big Spring natives and all,” Raney said. “We thought it was a great idea, so we got on board with this.”

Saturday's performance is the latest example of an attempt by museum officials to offer area residents a different schedule of events.

“This year, we decided to focus less on exhibits and more on local talent,” Raney said. “We wanted to bring different things to the community that haven't been done here before — and the reaction has been great. We've had a huge response from the community to events like our recent Orphan Train presentation. People have been really excited about it.

“It's a different avenue for us to take, but it's been a good avenue,” she added.

While the museum isn't concentrating solely on exhibits, it's not abandoning them, either. On Friday, the museum will host a wine-and-cheese reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for Colorado City artist Leada Wood, whose work is on exhibit at Heritage through April 27.

Admission is free to the reception, Raney said.
