The Big Spring Salvation Army post has welcomed two new majors — Orville and Debra Chambless.
The couple comes to Big Spring after serving five years at the Salvation Army station in Martinsville, Va.
“We had no inkling we were coming back to Texas,” Maj. Orville Chambless said. “It wasn't tough to hear, but it was unexpected.”
Orville was born and raised in Texas and majored in music education at West Texas State University — now West Texas A&M University — and has family in the Houston area. Debra is from Richmond, Va., and received an elementary education degree from Asbury College in Kentucky. The couple has three children — two daughters who are enrolling at Big Spring Independent School District and a son who who will take classes at Howard College.
Big Spring is not exactly unfamiliar territory to Orville, but it was a place he had only passed through. This time, though, it became a destination.
