The Howard College men’s and women’s basketball teams are in action today against Western Junior College Athletic Conference foe Odessa College.

The Howard women start things off at 5:45 p.m. in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum on Howard College’s campus and the men’s game follows at 7:45 p.m.

The No. 21 Howard men (13-6, 3-2) may need a win the most. The Hawks are coming off a 88-77 loss to Western Texas College in Snyder, being burnt by the Westerners’ Deverell Biggs for 31 points.

So in comes No. 18 Odessa College (18-3, 4-1) one of the teams head coach Mark Adams has said is the class of the WJCAC.

The Wranglers are led by Derrick Barden, who averages just past 17 points a game. Odessa College is seventh in the country in team defense, allowing 60.2 point a contest in 21 games.

The Hawks are trying to keep pace in the conference race with seven players, as suspensions have riddled the team’s season so far. But even with that, a win tonight would put Howard in second place in the conference.

The Howard women (18-4, 3-1) are newly ranked once again at No. 24 in the country. They’ve been on a roll lately after a close overtime loss at New Mexico Junior College. Since then, the Hawks have beaten then-No. 6 Midland College and Western Texas College on the road.

Tasha Tubbs has sparked the run back into the rankings, with a team-best 14.5 points a game and 53 3-pointers on the season. Taniqua and Twyla Ards are not far behind either, with 12.8 and 13 points per game, respectively.

The Lady Wranglers (12-9, 2-2) are led by Takola Larry and Klaherra Powell, who both score 13 point a game.
