One dead after apparent hit and run

January 6, 2012

Law enforcement officials with the Big Spring Police Department say they are investigating what appears to be the hit and run death of a man near the intersection of Sgt. Paredez and Trades Avenue on the city's north side sometime Thursday night.

According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the BSPD, investigators are not releasing the name of the victim pending notification of next of kin, which has not yet been confirmed.

Everett said the body was discovered Thursday evening and taken to Scenic Mountain Medical Center, where the man was pronounced dead by a Howard County justice of the peace.

“An autopsy was ordered and is expected to be completed this afternoon in Lubbock,” Everett said. “Right now, it appears the man was struck by a vehicle, but we won't know what the cause of death was for sure until we get the autopsy results. Nothing has been confirmed at this point, but this does appear to be a vehicle/pedestrian accident.”

Everett declined to comment on further details of the case, citing an open investigation.
