An early morning house fire Saturday claimed the life of a Big Spring man.

Big Spring Fire Department units were called to the 200 block of N.E. Sixth to battle the fire at about 5 a.m. Saturday, according to information released from BSFD Chief Craig Ferguson.

When firefighters arrived, they found house engulfed in flames, Ferguson said.

Rescue crews made entry into the house and found Manuel Cervantes, 61, still inside. They then pulled Cervantes from the building and transported him to Scenic Mountain Medical Center's emergency room.

Cervantes was pronounced dead shortly thereafter by Howard County Justice of the Peace Bennie Green.

Ferguson said the cause of the fire is under investigation. No other information was available as of press time Saturday.

Funeral services for Cervantes are pending at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
