February 4, 2013

A fire at an undisclosed location on the Alon USA Big Spring Refinery sent at least one person to the hospital Sunday night, according to local officials and unconfirmed reports.

Reports of an explosion at the Big Spring Refinery began circulating through the city and social media sites Sunday night at approximately 9 p.m. Big Spring Fire Chief Craig Ferguson confirmed shortly after that a fire had been reported at the local facility, however, there were no explosions.

According to Ferguson, numerous firefighting units responded to the fire, which was limited to an undisclosed portion of the refinery.

At least one person was transported to the emergency room at Scenic Mountain Medical Center following the fire with smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.

It's unclear at this time how long it took fire crews to bring the fire under control or how much damage was done to the refinery.
