One killed in apparent shooting

October 29, 2012

Law enforcement officials with the Howard County Sheriff's Office are investigating a shooting early Saturday morning that claimed the life of one Big Spring man and injured another.
Luis Adolfo Pena, 33, was pronounced dead at Scenic Mountain medical Center shortly after 2:30 a.m. from what investigators say appears to be a gunshot wound.
According to Sheriff Stan Parker, HCSO deputies were alerted to the scene at approximately 2:33 a.m. Saturday.
“Deputies were dispatched to 500 Driver Road, which is the old VFW building,” Parker said. “Upon arrival, they found Pena in the parking lot suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Pena was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center by emergency medical services, where he was later pronounced dead.”
Also injured in the altercation was Raul Mendez, 33, also believed to be of the Big Spring area, according to Parker.
“A second shooting victim, Raul Mendez, was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center by private vehicle,” Parker said. “Mendez was treated for his wounds at the emergency room and later released.”
An autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Kathryn Wiseman and is expected to be performed in Lubbock.
Parker said this morning no arrests have been made in the case and investigators are still working to establish a motive for the alleged murder.
“It's still early in the investigation,” Parker said. “As soon as we have some new information to release to the citizens, we'll do so.”
