Over the top: United Way exceeds its $250,000 goal

The United Way of Big Spring and Howard County did a victory lap during its annual business meeting Tuesday evening.

Despite a struggling economy — and bucking the trend of the past few years — the 2010 UW drive exceeded its goal of $250,000, which left both campaign officials and the agencies that receive funds from the organization in a celebratory mood.

Wayland Pierce, first vice president of the 2010 campaign, said $252,000 has been raised to date, with the promise of even more to come within the next few months.

What that meant for the 14 agencies who receive money from the United Way was a 60 percent increase in allocations from this time last year.
