Overpass collapse shuts down interstate

November 6, 2013

Sections of Interstate 20 west of Big Spring are closed following an overpass collapse late Tuesday evening.

The collapse occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday when an 18-wheeler struck beams supporting the FM 2566 overpass near the 170 mile marker of I-20.

Officials said the 18-wheeler first struck a guard rail, then over-corrected, sending it head-first into the support beams, which caused a section of the overpass to collapse onto the westbound lane of the interstate. A second 18-wheeler then struck the collapsed overpass.

Both drivers received minor injuries in the accident.

The eastbound lane of the interstate was expected to be reopened within a few days, but the westbound lane may be closed for up to two weeks. Traffic headed in that direction was being detoured at State Highway 176 (Andrews Highway) to SH 137 in Martin County.

Specialized equipment necessary to remove the collapsed overpass was en route to the scene this morning, but I-20 west of Big Spring is expected to be closed for the rest of today and Thursday, officials said.
