Phyllis Pettigrew Sparks

Phyllis Pettigrew Sparks, 88, of Cedar Park, formerly of Big Spring died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, in a Cedar Park nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rick Cunningham officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at the funeral home.

She was born July 20, 1923, in Grady, N.M., and married Robert "Sparky" Sparks on Aug. 9, 1942, in Clovis, N.M. He preceded her in death June 13, 1997. Sparky was a longtime employee of Cosden Oil and Chemical, now Alon USA.

Phyllis was one of nine children born to a New Mexico pioneer family who were very involved in ranching and rodeo. Her brother, Homer Pettigrew, was a National Rodeo Finals Champion. She was a nurse for Dr. Kurkendall and Dr. Porter and took pride in caring for others. She loved to travel and dance. Her personality lit up a room and her smile and laughter will be missed by all.

She was a member of 14th & Main Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son, Larry Sparks and wife Leslie of Cedar Park; one daughter, Janis Sparks Burrow of Austin; one brother, Kit Pettigrew of Clovis, N.M.; seven grandchildren, Rob Sparks and wife Melinda of Cedar Park, Nathan Sparks and wife Renee of Caruth, Mo., Kate Burrow Rupp and husband Andy of Denver, Colo., Brandy Rhodes and husband Troy of Lubbock, Liz Farley and husband Lane of Dallas, Dr. Carolyn Burrow Barber and husband Paul of LaJolla, Calif., and Cindy Burrow Conger and husband Brad of Philadelphia, Pa.; 16 great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Doris Banks of Big Spring and Eleanor Cornett of Fort Stockton.
