Pitching, defense lead Lady Steers to win

Big Spring High School Softball Coach John Sparks said the Lady Steers will have to rely on pitching and defense for any success they have this season.

A prime example of Sparks' comments came Wednesday. Big Spring managed only three hits against San Angelo Central, but received sterling performances from pitcher Logan Yarbar in particular and the Lady Steers' defense in general en route to a 3-1 victory over San Angelo Central at the BSHS Softball Complex.

Yarbar's performance wasn't particularly overpowering, but she was able to keep the Lady Bobcats off-balance by mixing her pitch speeds and locations. And, except for a sixth-inning hiccup, Big Spring's defense was immaculate.

For the team's offense, meanwhile, the word of the day was “opportunistic.” The Lady Steers took advantage of almost every gift San Angelo gave them, and mixed in a couple of timely hits to provide all the scoring Yarbar and the defense needed.
