Pops organizers hashing out final details

Pops in the Park set for July 3

With less than a week to go, plans for Pops in the Park are coming together.
During the last meeting before Pops takes place Tuesday at the amphitheater, committee members finalized plans for the annual event which will be celebrating its 15th year.
“We hope everyone comes out to join us for this extra special milestone anniversary event,” Kelly Grant, Pops in the Park co-chair said. “It will be a memorable event for the community with similarities from previous years and a few new additions.”
Gates are expected to open at 5 p.m. Tuesday along with the food vendors located at the top of the amphitheater. At this time, there are 26 vendors signed up with a few spaces left.
The evenings performances will begin at 6 p.m. with Don Turner and the Dixieland Band performing. A welcoming and announcements will follow the pre-show at 7:45 p.m.
“We’re looking forward to having someone local do our pre-show. We think he is someone people will enjoy hearing,” Pops in the Park Treasurer Debbye ValVerde said.
Following the pre-show will be the traditional performance by the Big Spring Symphony and flag ceremony at 8 p.m.
A flyover — scheduled to take place at 8:28 p.m.— put on once again by the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Midland, will include four planes.
“For those who were stationed at Webb Air Force Base, some of the planes should look familiar,” Kelly Grant, co-chair, said. “A couple of the planes were actually test planes at Webb.”
The flyover is taking place a little later this year than in previous years because of some changes in the schedule.
A video presentation recognizing local servicemen and women will begin at 9:15 p.m. The firework display, provided by Atlas — a Fort Worth company — will be choreographed to the Symphony’s music again and is set to start at 9:35 p.m.
“We are expecting new things this year since we are using a new company, but we are still expecting the same great big show we have had in the past,” ValVerde said.
With hot temperatures and little moisture in the area, Hansen and ValVerde said the committee will continue to work withy the Big Spring Fire Department and Howard County Volunteer Fire Department regarding precautions as they did last year.
“We are working to make sure we not only have a great show again this year, but also that we have a safe show, just like we have in the past,” ValVerde said.
According to Zack Johnson, fireworks coordinator for Pops in the Park, the fireworks were received last week and work has begun to prepare them for the upcoming event.
“Everything seems to be on schedule with the fireworks,” Johnson said.
Even though plans are set and the show is ready to go on, it is important to remember that the donations received from the community help fund the event, including pre-show entertainment, fireworks and other expenses accrued in the process. Any excess funding raised will be seed money for next year’s event, according to ValVerde.
Donations can be taken to the chamber office at 215 W. Third or mailed to P.O. Box 1391 c/o Big Spring Chamber of Commerce.
“We hope to see everyone there,” ValVerde said.
