Pops plans being finalized

May 5, 2012

Ready the sparklers and the aerials, planning for Pops in the Park is under way.

Tuesday, July 3 will once again be the date for the celebration. However, the show will start at 6:30 p.m., 30 minutes later than normal.

“We don't know how much difference it will make, but we are hoping temperatures will be a little bit cooler,” Jan Hansen, Pops in the Park chairman said.

Another change taking place this year will be the partnership with a new fireworks company out of Fort Worth. This year Atlas will be providing the fireworks used in the display.

“We are expecting new things this year since we are using a new company, but we are still expecting the same great big show we have had in the past,” Debbye ValVerde, chamber executive director and Pops committee member, said.

With the hot temperatures already creeping in and little moisture in the forecast, Hansen and ValVerde said the committee will continue to work with Big Spring and Howard County firefighters regarding precautions.

“We are working to make sure we not only have a great show again this year, but also that we have a safe show just like we have in the past,” ValVerde said.

A flag ceremony will still be included, with a few changes made from the previous year. The slide show honoring those who sacrificed their lives for our country will once again be included in the evenings events.

“We are asking families to start submitting their photos and short videos if they want their relatives to be included in the slideshow,” Hansen said.

The deadline for submissions is set at June 15.

A new member on board this year is Kelly Grant, who will be serving as co-chair for the Pops in the Park event. Grant is going to be a graduate of leadership Big Spring.

“I am excited to be coming into this group and am looking forward to the show,” Grant said.

Donations and sponsorships are other things that make a huge difference in the show.

“We truly appreciate all the support we have received in the past. Each year we try and make the show bigger and better and we hope to be able to continue to do that through the support of our contributors,” ValVerde said.
