Port-to-Plains on table for county commissioners

July 23, 2011

An agreement between Howard County and West Texas Centers tops Monday’s agenda for county commissioners, as the court holds its regularly scheduled meeting.
Also part of the agenda, County Judge Mark Barr is expected to discuss renewal of the health and employee benefits pool, as well as meet with officials involved in the Ports-to-Plains project.
The Ports-to-Plains Alliance, based in Lubbock, is a non-profit, non-partisan and community-driven advocacy group led by mayors, council persons, economic development officials, business and other opinion leaders from a nine-state, 2,300-plus mile economic development corridor between Texas and Alberta, Canada.
During the past decade, Ports-to-Plains Alliance members have raised more than $1 billion in federal funding for road improvements along the route, including extensive reconstruction of southern U.S. Highway 87.
The project was spear-headed locally for many years by former Howard County Commissioner Bill Crooker, who recently retired from the Precinct 3 seat on the commissioners court.
Also Monday, County Auditor Jackie Olson will present invoices, purchase requests and budget amendments, as well as a budget workshop.
County Treasurer Teresa Thomas is also scheduled to discuss personnel considerations, while County Road and Bridge Administrator Eddy Jameson will discuss pipeline crossings and a report on road maintenance within the county.
The meeting will get under way at 10 a.m. in the commissioners courtroom, located on the third floor of the county courthouse. For more information, call 264-2202.
