The contest is ended, but organizers of the chamber's “think positive” campaign are hopeful the theme will carry on.
Focus on the Positive campaign — sponsored by the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce — concluded Oct. 28 and 10 winners were named Oct. 31.
Area residents were asked to create and submit a top 10 list of positive things about Howard County, Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan and submit it to the chamber. The lists were combined into one list and at random 10 participants were awarded prizes from area business sponsors.
“We truly appreciate all those who participated and extend our appreciation to all the businesses who donated prizes,” said Debby ValVerde, chamber executive director.
Supporting businesses and winners are: Crispy's Cafe, Julie Bacon; Displays of Splendor, Dene Sheppard; Higginbotham-Bartlett, Dean Forrest; Johansen Nursery, Jan Foresyth; Mary Kay, Dene Sheppard Unit, Lana Anguiano; Moss Creek Ranch, Kyle Guthrie; My Favorite Place, Steve Nall; Sears of Big Spring, Sandra McMahon; T. Blackshear Interiors, Jackie Long; and The Red Barn Studio, Gloria McDonald.
“We truly have a jewel here in our community and we need to take pride in what we have right here in our own backyard and we have a lot,” ValVerde said. “We are the jewel of West Texas. We have a lot going for us and we need to stop, look around and utilize all that we have.”
After going through the entries, the top 10 list of positive things around Howard County are: Big Spring Family Aquatic Center, friendly people (warm and inviting), Comanche Trail Festival of Lights/Poinsettias, Howard College, Amphitheater and Comanche Trail Park, Big Spring State Park, churches welcome with love and friendship, Heritage Museum, good golf courses and the Settles renovation.
“We will continue taking lists for those who still want to turn them in,” ValVerde said. “We want to hear from everyone in Howard County.“
Lists can be dropped off at the chamber office, located at 215. W. Third St.
