Powwow to be unique celebration

Area residents curious about the customs and traditions of Native Americans will get a chance to see first hand how the first Americans have fun, as the Big Spring Powwow gets ready to once again take over the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum Saturday and Sunday.

The Powwow — a Native American tradition that includes competitive dancing and other activities — will begin Saturday with gourd dancing at 10 a.m., according to Big Spring Powwow Committee Treasurer Connie Lesser, and continue throughout the day.

“Gourd dancing will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. with grand entry set for 12:30 p.m.,” Lesser said. “We'll break for dinner at 5 p.m., with dancing expected to start back up from 6 p.m. until approximately 10 p.m.
