Prep work begins on treatment plant

Preliminary work has begun on a facility which water district officials hope will eventually add up to 2 million gallons a day to the area's water supply.

Crews have begun preliminary foundation work on Colorado River Municipal Water District's new raw water production facility at the intersection of FM 700 and 11th Place, said John Grant, CRMWD general manager.

Grant said workers are trucking in highway millings to weigh down and compact the soil prior to the start of foundation work for the facility, which will be designed to blend treated wastewater with the district's raw lake supplies.

“The soil at the site is very loose,” Grant said. “By bringing in the millings, we hope that will help compact the soil. It could save us $300,000 to $400,000 on the cost of the facility.”

Grant said construction bids are expected to be awarded in March, with completion of the facility projected for fall 2012.
