Rebuild or renovate? Public hearing on Moss set for Thursday

February 9, 2011

The public will get a chance to sound off on whether Big Spring school officials should replace or renovate Moss Elementary.

A public hearing on Big Spring Independent School District plans for Moss will highlight this month's meeting of the BSISD Board of Trustees, scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

When voters approved a $60 million school construction project in May 2010, original plans called for Moss Elementary (which was constructed in 1966 and is the newest of the current elementary campuses) to undergo a $7.5 million renovation so it could house students in grades kindergarten through 5.

Subsequent estimates, however, have put renovation costs in excess of $9 million, close to the amount needed to simply replace the building.
