Big Spring school officials want very much to add a fourth new elementary campus to their upcoming construction list.
Officials discussed the possibility of replacing Moss Elementary with a new campus during Thursday's meeting of the Big Spring Independent School District board of trustees.
When voters approved a $60 million bond proposal in May 2010, plans called for three new elementaries to replace existing campuses at Washington, Marcy and Goliad.
Moss, the most recently-built elementary in the district (constructed in 1966) was to be extensively renovated. However, rising renovation costs are approaching prices for a new building, leaving school officials wondering if they should simply bridge the difference and build a fourth new campus.
“We first started thinking about it in November after we looked at the prices of renovating the building,” BSISD Superintendent Steven Saldivar said. “”It will cost between $9.7 million and $10 million to renovate the building, and between $11.5 million and $11.7 million to build a new one.”
