Relay coming our way

April 15, 2013

One of the area's most anticipated events takes place this weekend at Blankenship Field.
Yes, it's time again for the Howard/Glasscock Relay For Life, which raises thousands of dollars for the fight against cancer.
How many dollars?
This year, organizers are hoping to raise $192,000.
The national theme is “Dream Big, Hope Big, Relay Big.”
“I am issuing the challenge this year of ‘Why not?’ to all community members, Relay Chairman Manny Negron said during the local Relay For Life kickoff event. “I want all residents in Howard and Glasscock counties to fight strong against cancer this year and make this the best Relay yet. Let’s fight strong. Let’s fight big in Howard and Glasscock counties.”
As volunteers and officials get ready for the big event, there will be a committee meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Home Hospice board room.
Relay For Life opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at Blankenship Field, located on the Big Spring High School campus. There is no charge to attend and cancer survivors are especially urged to attend and participate in the Survivor's Walk.
Many colorful activities and a whole lot of food will mark this year's event, as usual, and hundreds of supporters and volunteers will be spending the night camped on the field and taking turns walking around the track.
The event ends early Saturday morning.
More specific activities will be announced during the week.
