The Rev. J.B. Shewmake

January 3, 2013

The Rev. J.B. Shewmake, a.k.a. "The Little Dutchman," 78, formerly of Tarzan, Texas, departed from this world and was received into heaven Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel in Big Spring. Interment to follow at Trinity Memorial Park, Big Spring.

J.B. was born July 27, 1934, in Brownfield, the youngest of 11 children. He is survived by his sister, Christine Studer of Lubbock; and his brothers, Elbert Shewmake and wife Wynona of Mesquite and Marvin Shewmake of Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Patsy Jean Wheless in 1954 at First Baptist Church in Tarzan. She preceded him in death in 1986. A grandson, James Nicholas, went before him in 1995.

J.B. graduated from Loop High School, attended Hardin Simmons University and graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Through the years, he served as a pastor at various churches across Texas, most recently with Travis Baptist Church in Midland.

He also held a variety of positions, including the owner of the Little Dutchman store in Tarzan and later, the Good Music Store in Big Spring. A life-time lover of all types of music and instruments, the Rev. Shewmake played piano for his last worship service on Christmas Eve of 2012. A devout Christian, he used every opportunity to witness to those who were seeking Christ and “had ears to hear.” (Mark 4:23-24)

Survivors include his son, James and wife Kimberly of Anna; daughters, Robby and husband Randy Rather of Greenville, Jenny and husband Michael Garner of Allen and Shana Beck of McKinney. Grandpa Shew was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring. Online condolences can be made at:
