Rev. John Jenkins Lewis

The Rev. John Jenkins Lewis, 96, passed away on Feb. 27, 2014, at his residence. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater, Texas, with Pastor Homer Reddic and Pastor Houston McLendon officiating. A wake will be held 11 a:m. until service time Saturday, March 8, 2014, at McCoy Funeral Home. Graveside services will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

The Rev. John Jenkins Riley Lewis was born Sept. 29, 1917, to Frank Lewis and Vinnie Polk. He was educated in Eagletown, Okla. He joined the military in 1942, and earned the rank of sergeant. He was called into the ministry July 15, 1952, and attended Inter-Denomination Baptist Seminary School of Divinity in Dallas, Texas, and Kern Valley Baptist Institute in Bakersfield, Calif. He served as pastor at Second Community Baptist Church in Bakersfield, Calif., Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Henrietta, Texas, New Hope Baptist Church in Vernon, Texas, Macedonia Baptist Church in Quanah, Texas, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Ballinger, Texas, and Hopewell Baptist Church in Haskell, Texas. The Rev. Lewis was employed at North Plains Hospital in Borger, Texas, UCLA Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., and Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

The Rev. Lewis married Verna Workman, who preceded him in death. He married LaVerne Atwell on Nov. 12, 2011. His parents, nine brothers, two sisters, and a step-son preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Atwell Lewis of Big Spring, Texas; step-son, Keith Atwell of Odessa, Texas; step-daughter, Judy Wade of Clovis, N.M.; three step-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and four step great-great-grandchildren; a step-daughter in law, Louise Polk; two step-granddaughters; four step great grandchildren; and one brother, Luther Lewis and wife Hattie of Kansas City, Mo.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
