With Thanksgiving Day approaching, Salvation Army officials hope some in the community are willing to take on a little extra cooking or cleaning duties.
The Salvation Army will begin accepting food donations for its annual Thanksgiving community feast Tuesday, just one of many opportunities for people to volunteer this season.
“Last year, the Salvation Army here fed about 450 people which also included deliveries,” said Lt. Missy Romack “We still lack most of the side dishes, pies, and we don’t have any hams.”
Cooked food can be taken to the Salvation Army building, 811 West Fifth St., Romack said, and added a plea for any volunteers.
“There are several ways to volunteer,” she said. “Come help us on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the meal, but please come early in the morning to help get everything ready. Maybe someone would like to volunteer to do a craft with the children while they are waiting, or a church group would like to come play some music why people are eating. We also need help to prep and serve the food, those kinds of things.”
Romack also sent out a call for donations of canned and non-perishable food since the Salvation Army has found its pantry shelves — like many agencies that assist in helping those in the community who are food insecure — are looking pretty bare this year.
“We do feed on Thanksgiving and on Christmas, but we are asking people to just bring anything because our pantry shelves are empty,” she said “This year, we are asking for canned food and non-perishables so we can fill out our pantry for the rest of the year. We give out groceries everyday — not just on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Right now our pantry is just bare. So we are asking people this year, please give a few cans of green beans or things like that because we need everything especially non-perishables.
