Samuel 'Sammy' Munoz

Samuel “Sammy” Munoz, 58, of Big Spring, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, officiated by Msgr. Plagens, Deacon Clemente Villa and Deacon Johnny Arguello. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

He was born Sept. 5, 1954 in Big Spring, Texas to Claudia “Mage” Ramirez Munoz and Mariano “Mate” Marez Munoz. Sammy fathered a child at age 17, Carmelita Velasquez. He married at age 19 and had Sabrina Jordan Munoz. He later married Selia “Sally” Moron on Jan. 20, 1979 and together they had Sandra Marisa Munoz and Samuel Simon Munoz.

Sammy worked for the City of Big Spring in several departments, including the Sanitation Department, the Fire Department, and Code Enforcement. His greatest desire was to help the elderly. His work, which was funded by government grants, enabled him to help the elderly repair their homes or buy a better home. After the grants were terminated in 1981, he then went to work for the Howard County Appraisal District until his disability in 2003.

Sammy was an active member of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart Church until his illness. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was a director for Christmas in April until it dissolved. Sammy was very active with the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator until his death, and District Deputy for 3 years. Sammy’s strong leadership with the Knights of Columbus helped the Christmas in April complete several projects for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Munoz of Big Spring; three daughters, Carmelita and Randy Cadenhead of Topeka, Kan., Sabrina and Anastacio Andres Lozano of Lamesa, Texas, and Sandra Marisa Munoz of Big Spring, Texas; and one son, Samuel Simon Munoz of Big Spring, Texas. He also had three grandchildren he helped raise as his own, Johnny Marciano Munoz, Eliza Raye Munoz and Alexandria Simonae Munoz, all of Big Spring, Texas. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Ybarra and Mrs. Mary and Juan Ruiz. He also is survived by seven additional grandchildren.

Sammy had love for all and saw the good in everyone. He will be greatly missed by all that sought his valuable guidance.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mariano and Claudia Munoz; his brothers,Johnny and Jose “Quate” Munoz; and a sister, Tomasa Munoz Regalado.

Pallbearers will be Andy Ybarra, Johnny Ybarra, Juan Ruiz, Jr., Eddie Cervantez, Rudy Hernandez Jr., Orlando Munoz, Michael Munoz and Albert Ybarra. Honorary pallbearers will be Jesse Salazar, Ray Moron, Johnny Marciano Munoz and Carlos Munoz.
