Scam alert: Sheriff's office warns of bogus telephone calls

December 28, 2011

Officials with the Howard County Sheriff's Office say area residents should remain vigilant as they investigate reports of a possible phone scam where callers are identifying themselves as county employees.

According to Sheriff Stan Parker, the calls have come from a number identified as “private” by caller identification services.

“I have received information that a person identifying themselves as an employee of the Howard County Sheriff’s Office has been calling local residents,” Parker said. “The caller is stating they have found a wallet belonging to the person receiving the call and they need to get some information from them.

“In each case, the call came from a 'private' number, and when the recipient of the call started asking questions about the caller, they (the caller) would hang up. In each reported instance no vital information was given out.”

While it appears no one has yet fallen prey to these apparent scam artists, Parker said it's important to spread the word within the community and abroad so area residents — especially those isolated from the media and social networking circles — don't get drawn into these types of schemes.

“We are just wanting the citizens to know that this is happening, and for everyone to be aware that this is or has been going on,” Parker said. “If you receive a call of this nature and are suspicious of the caller, please hang up and call the sheriff’s office dispatch at 432-264-2244 or administration offices at 432-264-2231 to verify whether or not we are trying to actually contact you. Please do not give any personal information to anyone who you are unsure about.”
