School enrollment figures on the rise

September 9, 2011

No one really knows why school enrollment is up across most of Howard County, but no one's exactly complaining about the fact, either.

Big Spring and Coahoma school districts both reported enrollment gains as of the end of August, while Forsan's figures have remained stable, school officials said.

Big Spring Independent School District had 3,896 students enrolled as of Sept. 2, an increase of 33 from the same time last year, Superintendent Steven Saldivar said. Most of the gain was at the elementary level, which reported 21 more students than the previous year.

The most significant enrollment jump was reported at Coahoma ISD, where 819 students were signed up for classes as of Aug. 31. That compares to an enrollment of 763 students at the end of August 2010.
