Schools top Seliger's agenda

The Texas Legislature may not be in session, but that doesn't mean state representatives don't have work to do.

Kel Seliger, Big Spring's representative in the Texas Senate, was in town Tuesday to discuss a variety of issues — including education finance and water — with the local Young Republicans organization.

Sen. Seliger (R-Amarillo), said how the state finances schools in the future will be perhaps the most critical issue facing the legislature when it reconvenes in 2013.

A coalition of Texas public school districts have filed a lawsuit challenging the way the state finances education, alleging that the current system has resulted in a de facto state property tax, which is prohibited under the Texas Constitution.

While not commenting on the lawsuit, Seliger agreed that the current system is in need of overhaul.

“The lawsuit really doesn't change the job facing us,” he said. “We have a system that's fundamentally inequitable and we need to change it.”
