Couple honored with Good Scout Award
Itâ€™s not just taking the oath, but living up to it that makes a difference.
This is the second year for the Good Scout Award Dinner, scheduled for Thursday and this year the winner of the award is doubley special. This year, two people are being honored with this award â€” John and Cynthia Scott â€” not just one. Hayes Stripling was the recipient at the 2010 Good Scout Award Dinner.
â€śThis award recognizes individuals, or in this case a couple, who demonstrate the principles scouting teaches to its youth members,â€ť Valerie Acosta, media contact for Boy Scouts of America Buffalo Trail Council, said.
The dinner, which will be at the Big Spring Country Club, is open to the public and is $50 per person. Reservations need to be made by this afternoon according to Acosta. Dress for the evening is business casual and will be able to accommodate 200 attendees. Money raised from the event will benefit Permian Basin scouting programs.
â€śIt provides training for adult leaders, covers material costs for our annual recruitment drives and cost of insurance and scholarships for scouts who cannot afford scouting materials or the cost of attending events,â€ť Acosta said.
The Scottâ€™s are active on over 12 boards, including junior achievement, Salvation Army, Greater Big Spring Rotary Club, Crossroads Housing Development, Big Spring Chamber of Commerce, First Christian Church, Buffalo Trail Council and Wester Region Texas Federation of Womenâ€™s Clubs.
â€śThe scout oath states scouts will do their duty to God and country and to obey the scout law,â€ť Lyman Gifford, scout executive, said. â€śJohn and Cynthia have demonstrated in their daily life each facet of the oath. They also live by the scout law by being trustworthy, helpful, thrifty, reverent and most definitely, cheerful.â€ť
