Seniors are taking over the Big Spring Family Aquatic Center every Tuesday morning.
A new exercise option for the older set in the community, low-impact senior citizen water exercise, was started a few weeks ago and has been growing in numbers.
Classes take place from 11 a.m. until noon Tuesday â€” at which time the aquatic center is closed to the public â€” and will continue until the closing day of the water park for the year. A lifeguard is on duty during this time. The class is open to senior citizens in the community age 50 and older.
â€śThis is the only place in the community seniors can get this type of water-resistance exercise,â€ť Gloria McDonald, retirement community ex-oficio for the Big Spring Chamber, said. â€śThis gives them a chance to get outdoors and exercise instead of having to be on a treadmill inside. It offers another option.â€ť
During the class, seniors can take advantage of a low-impact water exercise in the lazy river. According to McDonald, the river is turned on a low setting and participants utilize it as a form of resistance as they walk up stream during the allotted hour.
By taking part in the activity, benefits can effect the lungs, legs, hips and knees. The process serves as a low-impact aerobic exercise.
For those wanting to take part in the classes, the cost is $4 per visit. Once the allotted time has concluded and the aquatic center opens back up to the public, participants will be allowed to stay and enjoy the entire facility if they so choose.
