Shirley Jane Dulin Smith, 59, of Big Spring went to her heavenly home Feb. 23, 2013, in Midland, Texas, with her husband and best friend, John, holding her hand.
She was born Sept. 16, 1953, in Albuquerque, N.M. She grew up and attended school in Lawton, Okla. In 1978, she joined the United States Army and served one tour of duty in Germany. She returned in 1982 when she met and married Frank Laboy. They moved to Hawaii where she worked as medical secretary. They were blessed with two children, Frank Jr. and his sister, Stevie. They were later divorced and she met and later married John Smith. They made their home in Big Spring where they lived until she passed away. Shirley worked for MHMR and then attended school in Snyder where she received her LVN and made the Dean's list. She worked at the VA Medical Center and then at the veteran's Home. She never cried at work, but when she got home after a veteran died she would break down and cry.
She is survived by her husband, John Smith of Big Spring; her children, Frank Jr. and Stevie Laboy of California, one sister, Joyce Morse and husband Eddie; and one brother, Chester Tate and wife, Pam, all of Sterling, Okla.; numerous cousins and aunts in Lawton, Okla.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister, and her mother and father.
Shirley loved the early morning, especially in the early spring when she would sit on the porch with her coffee and listen to the birds and enjoy the sunrise. She loved her family, and especially her grandkids. She will be greatly missed. Shirley was the most wonderful person I ever met or loved.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring. Online condolences can be made at: www.npwelch.com
