Law enforcement officials with the Big Spring Police Department are investigating the Sunday shooting death of a 27-year-old Big Spring man in the 200 block of N.E. Third Street.
Christopher Castanuela, 27, of Big Spring was pronounced dead at Scenic Mountain Medical Center emergency room shortly after 6 a.m. Jan. 1 by Howard County Justice of the Peace Quail Dobbs, who later ordered an autopsy.
According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the BSPD, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of N.E. Third Street at approximately 6:10 a.m. in reference to a shooting.
“At the scene, officers found that a male subject had been shot but had left in a private vehicle prior to their arrival,” Everett said. “Officers also arrived at the SMMC emergency room, where the victim had been taken. The victim was dead on arrival.”
Everett said Castanuela had been shot multiple times but declined to comment on the type of firearm used in the shooting.
“Officers at the scene encountered witnesses who were not cooperative and gave conflicting stories,” Everett said. “No motive has been established for the shooting and no arrests have been made at this time.”
Everett said evidence in the case leads investigators to believe there is one shooter at this time. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed this morning.
The shooting is not believed to be gang-related.
