Garden City — Head Coach Matt Odom was tasked with bringing back Garden City's winning tradition. Six games into the season, the Bearkats have notched only one win.Garden City hosted a formidable Robert Lee (5-1) squad on Friday and although they played the Steers tough, lost the battle 30-14 — a fairly narrow defeat by six-man standards. It isn't all bad in Garden City, however, as Head Coach Matt Odom's squad has played a brutal predistrict schedule and despite suffering through injuries to key players, he feels his team has improved since the first game.“Defensively, we played a good game,” Odom said. “We held them to four touchdowns, we got after it. The offense did a great job. We had 325 yards of total offense and we ran the ball well all night. We kept the ball out of their hands.”The problem was capitalizing when Garden City had the chance to do so.“Obviously, we didn't put the ball in the end zone enough,” Odom added.Finishing drives and eliminating costly penalties are the facets of the game Odom plans to improve as the Bearkats prepare for district play.“We need to be a bit more disciplined,” Odom explained. LENORAH — The Grady Wildcats are on a roll under first-year Head Coach Chris Kukendall. Starting with a come-from-behind victory against rival Sands in Week Three, Grady has now won four straight games. Last night, the Sterling City Eagles fell prey to the Wildcats, 58-42 at Tunnell Field, thanks to some big offensive plays in the second half by the retooled Grady squad.Quarterback E.J. Rodriguez led the Wildcats, passing for 124 yards and four touchdowns as well as a rushing touchdown. The Wildcats will try to keep the win streak alive when they travel to Garden City (1-5) on Oct. 12.IMPERIAL — The Sands Mustangs traveled to Buena Vista for a predistrict bout against the Longhorns and came away with a convincing, 54-8 victory to improve to 4-2 on the season.
