Soaring fuel prices cloud budget plans

Howard County officials began fiscal planning for the coming year Monday with a budget workshop, as commissioners and department heads continue to look cautiously toward the state legislature.

County Judge Mark Barr and county commissioners met with Eddy Jameson, road and bridge administrator for the county, Monday to discuss the coming year and possible budgetary challenges facing the government agency.

“In the road and bridge department, I think the biggest worry we have going into the next fiscal year is the price of fuel,” Barr said. “With the way gas prices are rising right now, it's really hard to know what our fuel budget is going to look like until we get a little closer to September.”

Jameson's department, which handles county road maintenance, is just one of many departments county commissioners will be looking at in the coming weeks, according to Barr.
