Soup's on: Cook-off to benefit monastery restoration

Nothing goes better with cold weather than a bowl of soup, except maybe multiple bowls of soup.

The 22nd Annual Great Texas Soup Cook-off is fast approaching. For two hours on Feb. 19, the aroma of soup will overtake the Martin County Community Center in Stanton.

Chefs from the Permian Basin will serve it out to try and obtain the title of best-tasting soup. The public will be able to sample the different soups from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“All the proceeds will go towards restoring the Convent,” Kim Baker, representative of the Martin County Chamber of Commerce, said. The cook-off is a yearly fundraiser put on by Martin County Convent Inc., in hopes of raising enough funds to restore and protect the historic Carmelite Monastery building.

For those wanting to submit recipes for the cookbook and partake in the competition, entry forms must be filled out and returned no later than Feb. 15. Recipes must also be submitted, otherwise they will not be included in the cookbook. Entry forms can be mailed to The Great Texas Soup Cook-Off, 3508 FM 829 Unit 9, Lenorah, 79749. There is no entry fee for contestants.
