Special bins are for trash and not trees

Time is running out for area residents looking to get rid of their mountain of Christmas trash — wrapping paper, boxes, bows — without a trip to the landfill.

Trash containers set up last week in the parking lots of Coronado Plaza, Big Spring Mall, College Park Shopping Center, Howard County Fair Barn and in the 700 block of N. Gregg Street are set to be removed Wednesday, according to officials with the city of Big Spring.

“We've placed five large dumpsters at several different sites around the city in an effort to deal with the large amount of trash generated by the holiday,” Todd Darden, assistant city manager, said. “Those dumpsters will remain in place until Wednesday, giving folks a chance to get rid of items — such as large boxes — in the meantime.”

One holiday item that is not allowed in those containers, however, is live Christmas trees, which will be accepted only at the landfill and compost facility.
