Splash-In Saturday

May 24, 2013

Crossroad area residents will be able to splash in Saturday. Then they'll have to splash out again, if only for a week.

Splash-In at the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center will be held from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. It's free — yep, free — to the public.

In the past, the event would celebrate the opening of the city pool but not this year.

“They normally have Splash-In on Memorial Day weekend and that opens the swimming season,” said Debbye ValVerde, Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce executive director. “But this year the kids don't get out of school until the following week. So the aquatic center won't officially open for the season until Saturday, June 1.”

Folks may see some activity at the pool next week, though.

“Some of the schools may be using the pool as a sort of end-of-school activity, but it won't be open to the public,” explained Debbie Wegman, Convention & Visitors Bureau director.

When the center does open for the 2013 season — on June 1, remember — swimmers age 3 and above will pay $3. Children under age 3 are admitted without charge.

Hours will be noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. The center will be closed Mondays.

This Saturday's Splash-In will be sponsored by KBST. There will be games and other activities and concessions — no, not free — will be available.

The aquatic center is located in Comanche Trail Park. This is the second year for the center, named after former mayor and city councilman Russ McEwen, to be open. Capacity is 600.
