Standardized dress code gets look by BSISD officials

Local public school officials are looking at a standardized dress code as one way to help improve the learning environment at Big Spring secondary campuses.

Big Spring Independent School District officials trustees vigorously debated the idea during their monthly meeting at the high school board room Thursday night.

Proponents of a standardized dress code said the plan, which would effect students in grades 6 through 12, would help build a better learning environment at the junior high and high school.

Superintendent Steven Saldivar stressed that the new code would not mean uniforms at the campuses.

“The students would wear polo-type shirts and jeans,” he said. “We want to amp up the focus on academics and take away the focus on dress. Research shows that when you take away the focus on dress, that will assist you in moving forward and building a culture that is fully focused on learning."
