Stanton girls, boys steal wins at Forsan

FORSAN — Forsan girls’ basketball coach Robert Hillger didn’t have much explanation for Tuesday’s 44-41 loss to Stanton at home.

He said Stanton beat Forsan fair and square.

“I couldn’t figure out our identity Tuesday. At the beginning of the game, really the first half, we’re pushing and running and they’re making shots and we’re not. We like to push and run and we were down five (at the half) anyway, so I was like ‘Alright, we’re going to slow down the pace of the game. We’re going to dictate what we want to do and not let them dictate what we want to do.”

In what was a back and forth affair, Forsan looked like it was out of the game in the third quarter when Stanton outscored the Lady Buffaloes 12-5. The third quarter was good enough for a 41-29 Stanton lead.
But Forsan battled back in the fourth quarter — thanks to forcing turnovers. It was enough to get the last shot of the game when Stanton was up 44-41.

Forsan’s Ambra Hill took the 3-pointer to tie, but it was off the mark and Stanton staved off a district rival.

“You have to give them a lot of credit,” Stanton head coach Jim Kinnear said. “I think we had a 12-point lead and then they picked up their defensive pressure and we didn’t do a very good job of handling it. We let them back in the game. But you have to give our kids a lot of credit, too. We were able to cowboy up and hold our composure.”

Free throws were huge in the closing minutes of Tuesday’s game, Hillger said. Forsan was 13 for 30 from the line overall. Stanton was just 4 of 11.

Stanton is 2-4 in District 3-2A play and Forsan is 3-3.

Forsan boys
FORSAN — Stanton’s Tyler Fulton went on a tear as usual and Trace Sidle’s 19 points didn’t hurt the team’s efforts in Forsan Tuesday night.

Stanton beat Forsan 58-44 to move to 3-1 in district play. Forsan had Ty Johnson and Patrick Robles score in double figures, but what Fulton and Sidle did powered Stanton past the Buffaloes.

Forsan dropped to 2-2 in district play after Tuesday’s loss.
