Stanton takes down Kermit in bi-district playoffs

February 23, 2011

Heather Leiphart/Odessa American — Stanton’s Grayson Gray (33) fights for a rebound during the Buffaloes 57-48 win over Kermit in boys’ Class 2A bi-district playoff action Tuesday in Odessa.

ODESSA — Tyler Fulton and Grayson Gray have been big for the Stanton Buffaloes all season.

So why would that change in Tuesday’s bi-district playoff game against Kermit?

The two combined for 42 points in the Buffs’ 57-48 win at Odessa College in Odessa.

Stanton head coach Ken VanCuren said he was impressed with the way his team stepped up at the right time.

“We hadn’t been playing well of late,” he said. “I thought last night we picked up our intensity level. It is the playoffs and I hope kids do that. They responded pretty well. I thought Tyler and Grayson pretty much took the game over. We got the ball in the paint to them.”

For the season, Fulton has been Stanton’s go-to player, but right up there with him, Gray and Trace Sidle have been key, too.

VanCuren said Gray’s size makes it tough for opponents to guard him in the post and Fulton can simply create offense. The coach is hoping that continues to be a tough matchup for opponents.

Next up for Stanton is No. 18 Bushland in the area championship round at 6 p.m. Friday at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock.
