State hospital honors top volunteers

April 15, 2011

Steve Smith presented the women of Salem Baptist Church with the Jack Y. Smith Award Thursday during Big Spring State Hospital’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

The luncheon, “Touching Lives, Lifting Spirits,” recognized approximately 100 volunteers who have raised more than $1.5 million in the past 10 years for the patients at Big Spring State Hospital through fundraisers, soliciting donations and operating The Chalet Resale Shoppe.

Mary Sue Walker and Mary Womack accepted the award for the members who bake and deliver more than six cakes every month for patient birthday parties. Each unit celebrates birthdays for the patients on the second Thursday of the month and depend on the women to provide the treats.
