Steer Band loses out on tie-breaker

October 29, 2012

LUBBOCK – The Big Spring High School Band was oh-so-close to earning a spot in the state marching contest, but close wasn't good enough in this case.
The Steer Band lost out on its ticket to state by tie-breaker at Saturday's Class 3A Area Marching Contest in Lubbock.
Lubbock Cooper, Abilene Wylie and Monahans finished first through third, respectively, to earn a spot in the University Interscholastic League state marching contest, which will be held in Austin next month.
Big Spring finished fifth after Saturday morning's preliminary rounds to advance to the evening finals, in which they finished tied for the third and final state qualifying spot with Monahans and Levelland.
The complicated tie-breaker, which even BSHS Band Director Rocky Harris didn't fully understand, gave Monahans the all-important third-place finish, while Levelland and Big Spring finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
“It does sting,” Harris said. “I was glad they were competitive enough to be right there at the end – that's all you can ask for – but to come that close and not make it hurts.”
BSHS was hoping to qualify for the state contest for the first time since 2001.
Despite missing the state contest by the slimmest of margins, the Steer Band went down with guns figuratively blazing, their director said.
“The kids had two of their most outstanding performances of the year Saturday,” Harris said. “They did very well … and the bands who finished ahead of us did very well, also. Anyone who watched Saturday's contest knew that all eight bands in the final round were deserving of a spot in the state contest.”
The band now turns its attention to the remainder of football season, then it's on to preparations for the annual Christmas concert Dec. 1 and all-region band tryouts after that.
“It's been an amazing season,” Harris said. “The kids did an amazing job and demonstrated some outstanding work. I'm honored to have taken them this far.
