Steer golfers in second place at regional tourney

April 18, 2013

The Big Spring boy's golf squad shot a 309 during the first round 18 holes of the regional tourney in Lubbock. Devin Roberson led the Steers, shooting a 73. BSHS is currently leading Wylie by one stroke and 12 strokes behind first place Andrews.

LUBBOCK — Thirty degrees with 30 miles an hour wind gusts. That's what the Big Spring boys golf team is facing today as they wrap up the regional tournament at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock.

The Steers shot a good round yesterday and at press time, are sitting in second place with a score of 309 — one stroke ahead of rival Abilene Wylie and 12 strokes behind No. 1 Andrews.

“I'm proud of our kids,” Joslin said of Wednesday's performance. “It was really tough, the wind was blowing hard. We wanted to put ourselves in position to get a top three finish finish and we did that.”

The elements can certainly affect the outcome of a golf game, but since Big Spring is a windy place, Joslin believes his team may be better equipped than most to deal with the adversity.

“I think we're really at an advantage,” Joslin explained. “Some of the kids that come from around Austin and some other places aren't used to it, but we play in the wind all the time. Those five guys out there can compete in just about anything. It's their mental toughness.”

Devin Roberson's score of 73 led BSHS on Tuesday and was good enough to put him in third place in the overall standings. Tyler Bryan shot a 77, Tate Kennedy took 79 strokes, Jason Guevara shot an 80 and Ryan Pollard scored 82.

Wylie's Taylor Grant is the individual leader after he shot a 68 on opening day.

Junior Kelsie Guinn was the sole representative from the young Big Spring girls golf squad in Lubbock this week. Guinn's successful season came to a close Tuesday after she shot an 81 at Shadow Hills. She finished 14th in the region.

“She played great the whole year,” Joslin added. “Each year, she has gotten better and we look for even better things from her next year.”

Final results from the tourney will be published in Friday's edition of the Herald.
